As the city that invented cacio e pepe and carbonara, Rome isn’t renowned for its vegan cuisine. But veganism is on the rise among Rome's international visitors. And with Italy's vegan population numbering around 800,000, the Eternal City is fast adapting to demand.

Here are our tried-and-tested top-rated vegan restaurants in Rome

Best Vegan restaurants in Rome

Le Bistrot

Address: Via delle Sette Chiese 160, 00145

Open: Monday - Saturday, 20:00 - 23:00

This cozy, family-run restaurant is well off the beaten path but it’s well worth visiting for its vast vegan menu. The sisters who run it make you feel more like you’re at a friend’s house than visiting a restaurant, greeting you with a glass of prosecco while their dogs welcome you with a friendly bark (or two, but never more).

Pacchheri alla Carbonara with Zucchini

Le Bistrot’s paccheri alla carbonara is possibly the best vegan pasta in Rome while the tiramisù is to die for. The restaurant boasts good vegan wine options too, though as the menu changes every week what you get depends on availability. Make sure to book your table in advance as spaces are limited.

Buddy Veggy Restaurant Cafè

Address: Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 107A, 00186

Open: Monday - Friday 10 am - 11 pm, Saturday - Sunday 9 am - 11 pm

Don’t be fooled by the name. Buddy is authentically Italian, specializing in locally sourced plant-based food that's been given a Roman and Italian twist.

Buddy does the best vegan pizza in Rome, and the rest of its menu is excellent too.

I brought my mum and her partner here for her birthday, and we loved it. He has been vegan for 35 years and was blown away by the menu, not least their choice of vegan beer.

I'd had carbonara the night before so went for the pizza strapazzata, with scrambled tofu, tomato passata, Tropea onions, leek, and olives. Mum went for the vegan carbonara and John went for the Tagliata di Seitan affumicato. Buonissimo.

Buddy also does a vegan breakfast (with options varying from anything as simple as an American Vegan Breakfast to pancakes with maple syrup.

Its central location makes it ideal after a day of sightseeing. In fact, it’s conveniently located right around the corner from Piazza Navona, where we finish our Daytime Rome Walking Tour.

Flower Burger

Address: Via Dei Gracchi 87, 00192

Open: Daily 12:30 - 3 pm, 7 - 10:30 pm

Flower Burger offers the closest you get to vegan fast food in Rome. It’s situated in the Prati district, making it the perfect place for a quick bite after Walking around the Vatican.

Flower Burger isn't a vegan restaurant, but a fast-food bar. They don't have table service so make sure to order at the bar or you'll be waiting a while. And just a quick heads up - the Cecio spicy burger isn’t all that spicy, at least by western standards (Italians don’t generally like spicy food).

That said, Flower Burger is great for something different. The burger buns are delicious, the fries are extra crispy, and the plant-based burgers themselves are delicious, making it the perfect stop for vegans and non-vegans alike.

Flower Burger is easy to reach on foot from the Vatican or by taking the metro line A to Ottaviano and walking for 5 minutes.

Saravanaa Bhavan Rome

Address: Via Volturno 1, 00185

Open: Daily 11:30 am - 11 pm

When in Rome, Indian cuisine might not come top of your list.

But if vegan pizza and pasta get repetitive, make sure to check out Saravanaa Bhavan. This vegan restaurant is part of a world-class chain that specializes in veggie and vegan-based South Indian cuisine.

And oh my god is it delicious.

To get there, take the Metro line A to Repubblica station and walk for 5 minutes towards Castro Pretorio.

Saravanaa Bhavan is by no means the only Indian restaurant with excellent vegan options. Close to Piazza Venezia, but tucked away from the frenetic atmosphere of the city centre, is Bibliothè.

Its Ayurveda-inspired interior houses more than just a vegan restaurant; it's a cafe, arts centre, and place where people come to chill out. Do be sure to pay a visit when you're in the area.
