When budgeting for your trip to Florence, make sure to factor in the city tax (tassa di soggiorno). Commonly known as the 'tourist tax', this may not be included in the listed price of your accommodation, in which case you'll be asked to pay it directly to the establishment at the end of your stay. Including this in your budget is vital to avoid any surprises.

City Tax in Florence - Rates for 2025

For those opting for rentals like Airbnb or bed and breakfasts, the tax is set at €5.50 per night. This rate also applies to country bed and breakfasts within the greater Florence metropolitan area.

Let's use an example to understand how this works. Imagine a couple staying in a 3-star hotel for five nights. The city tax for their stay would be €30 (€6 x 5 nights). This straightforward calculation ensures you can easily budget for this additional cost.

Simple enough so far. But what would happen if this family checked out of their hotel and spent a weekend touring Rome before returning to Florence for another few nights? Could they carry over the four nights of city tax they've already paid? Unfortunately not. The city tax does not carry over between cities as each has its own rates and policies, so you'll need to budget for these separately.

Florence's city tax is put towards promoting the city as a tourist destination, supporting services such as info points and tourist services, and financing the city's infrastructure to keep things running effectively. Florence's city council introduced the nightly tax at the beginning of 2011 and has raised substantial amounts over the subsequent years.

Do children pay city tax in Florence?

No. Children under 11 are exempt from paying city tax in Florence. The following groups are also exempt.

  • Residents of Florence.
